3M Award for Innovation in Health & Safety 2008
The 3M Award aims to promote excellence in health and safety,
recognising the commitment, innovation and
challenge of improving health and safety
for the New Zealand workforce.
What can I win?
- The Gold Award Winner receives $3,000 towards professional development.
- The Silver Award Winner receives $1,000 towards professional development.
- The Bronze Award Winner receives $500 towards professional development.
What do I need to do?
What work have you put in place that has achieved great results improving the health and safety of those around you?
We need to understand what you've done and the results you've achieved for you to be in the running for the major award
of $3000. Don't sell yourself short by thinking your work may not be important enough to submit, the work you are doing
every day is making an important difference to the health and safety of the people you work with. Make sure you put your
achievements forward for recognition.
Am I eligible?
- The entry should fall into the category of improving health and safety in the New Zealand workforce and you must be
working in health and safety in New Zealand. E.g. your program could include a cross functional team or research.
- Entries can be from an individual or a team; each prize is awarded per entry only.
- You must include a signed statement confi rming you are the originator of the work put forward.
- You will need to be able to present your entry at the 2008 OHSIG* Conference and attend the conference dinner.
- The OHSIG Conference is being held at the Aotea Centre, Auckland on the 11th & 12th September 2008.
- Cost of attending the conference to be covered by the award entrant(s). 3M will cover the cost of two dinner tickets per award finalist entry if required.
Who will be judging?
- 3M will select a shortlist of three finalists from the entries received.
- The judging panel at the conference will consist of four members from OHSIG. The judges scoring and an audience
vote will make the selection of the winner. The judges having 1 vote each and audience choice worth 1 vote.
- The judges decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
How do I enter?
Written entries should be submitted by 5pm Thursday 31st July 2008 to: Andrea Parr, 3M NZ Ltd, PO Box 33-246,

- The three finalists will be notified Friday 15th August 2008, by phone or mail, that they will be presenting their entry to a judging panel at the 2008 OHSIG Conference in Auckland.
- The format of an application is up to you but it should include information that follows the judging criteria below. Clearly describe the program, how it was carried out and the results achieved. Written entries must be no more than 2000 words.
- It is anticipated that where a group of people have been involved, the application will be made by the group leader or
champion with the involvement of others being recognised.
- Presentations at the conference are to be no longer than 20 minutes and are open to other conference delegates to attend.

Innovative Thinking - 20 points
Showing new ways of applying existing ideas or the development a new way of doing things.

Innovative Technology - 10 points
The development of new technology or using existing technology in new ways.

Proactivity - 10 points
Taking action on problems before they develop to be significant.

Sustainability - 20 points
How long has the program been in operation and will it remain effective into the future.

Applicability - 20 points
The degree to which the program could affect a large number of workers. Could it be used in other industries?

How well has the program worked?
